I think, if I understand you correctly, that you think there may be some ambiguity with just saying "his family is Jewish" because it doesn't explicitly specify that he himself adopted the family religion. Fair point, I am not sure how to word it appropriately for the Early life section though. I will note that the lead of the article states "becoming the first Jewish candidate", so by the time the reader gets to the Early life section they should have little doubt about his religion.
